Would you believe this started out life as a stock standard 1984 Toyota 4runner? The 4runner now stands a full 23″ taller than when it originally left the production line. The added height was achieved through completely modifying the stock suspension and driveline setup. The absolute basics of the change in height is due to a 3″ body lift, 4″ spring lift and the addition of 44″ super swamper tyres.
The front suspension has gone for an independant setup to a live axle with leaf springs and drop shackles(drop shackles give another 3 to 4″ of suspension travel) along with 9 stage toughdog custom shocks. The rear end has the same custom toughdog shocks and extended shackles.

“The motor isn’t all that wild, as it never was intended to be a powerhouse and the transfer case makes up for whatever it may lack powerwise. I went for a Commodore V6 mated upto a T700, it has had heads ported, 65mm V8 throttle body, magna injectors and police chip.”

“I took it 4wding and another 4wd club was there they were saying that mine was over tyred and under powered. Around about lunch time we caught up with them their lead car was stuck in a mud hole so when they pulled him out(patrol, front & rear diff locks, turbo deisel) they all drove around it. As i started to go in they all stopped to watch.
About half way through I got bored so I put my foot on the brake and let it rip making it a really deep hole. Then drove out the other side. One them told me my front diff was broken when I told him it hadn’t been connected for about 2 years his jaw dropped.”

Each tyre weighs in at around 100kgs a piece, so changing tyres isn’t a one man job. Also Phil use to drive the 4runner on the road with the 44’s (and huge lift) when it was registered and only ever got pulled over by the boys in blue once. They were more interested in having a look at the car/truck than fining him.

The 4runner doesn’t get a whole lot of driving these days but Phil has taken it down to WSID for a run on the 1/4 as a laugh and will be taking the 4runner (44’s and all) to WSID this wednesday ( July 2nd ‘08), so if you want to see the 4runner in the flesh come down to WSID. It’s best time so far has been a 17second 1/4 with the 44″ tyres on too!

What’s Next? “I’m currently building up a mini with a mate that should be as much of a headturner as NOTOY. Basically it’s a mini that has a custom chassis, chopped roof, suicide doors and will be powered by an injected 5L.”
