Darwin Powercruise 2008

powercruise 13 darwin 2008

The first thing that springs to mind about Darwin is what a beautiful place it is, great weather, hot back packers and cops that don’t seem too fussed about what speeds you travel at.

Our falcodore couldn’t do anymore than 205 on the speedo (GPS read 201). That’s flatout with four people, luggage and the A/C huffing and puffing – not bad for a stock standard taxi.

What we really went to the top end to see was all the action on track at Darwin Powercruise 13 2008. The biggest standout over the entire powercruise weekend would have to be the crowd. We’ve traveled all over Australia for events and not one single place has had the same atmosphere.

Gazza Nationals Calder Park 2008

Gazza Nationals Calder Park 2008

Gazza Nationals hit Calder Park for the first time and looks set to be kick some ass in years to come. Entrants cruised Calders track all weekend, dropping thick sets up and down the back straight, lighting up the ¼ mile with powerskids and drag racing.

Dial Your Own Drags

This is the ultimate equalizer when it comes to drag racing, power is taken out of the equation and skill of a driver is all that matters. Entrants set their dial in number after doing a couple of warm runs.

Powercruise 12 Sydney 2008

It was looking as though Powercruise 12 might have to be called off due to rain early on in the week in Sydney. However the skies opened up and the sun beamed down to provide perfect weather for the entire weekend that would be Powercruise 12.

The largest Powercruise to date with 913 entrants in total, cars had to be turned away as there just wasn’t enough room to cram more in. Makes you think that next year is only going to get bigger, perhaps WSID and Eastern Creek could be used in 2009.

Summernationals 2008 WSID

Summernationals was held at WSID over the weekend past, with a huge competitors list, ranging from Super Street, Junior Dragsters, Modified Bike, Competition Bike, Modified, Super Sedan, Super Gas, Competition, Super Stock and Super Charged Outlaws.

I have to say I really do enjoy seeing classes like the super stock running 9 and 10 sec passes, with so much attitude and wheel standing at the 30 foot mark. It is so much easier to relate with those classes. Don’t get me wrong, cars running below 7 sec’s are definitely NOT boring they just seem to do it seemingly easy, I’m sure it does not feel easy inside the car though. Nothing like watching a car get all tail happy mid track or even lifting the front wheels 2 or 3 feet off the deck.
