Top Gear Australia Episode 1

Top Gear Australia

Well we were lucky enough to attend the production of the very first episode of Top Gear Australia (aires 29th September).

So what did we think? We were about as excited as an ethiopian with a hamburger to begin with. Upon entering the hangar at Bankstown Airport, we were presented with Australia’s new top gear studio. The hangar looked pretty much identical to what the UK studio looks like on the box. A few cars littered around the outer edge of the hangar with a couple of couches on the center stage. Not to mention a few walls scattered with parts the local wrecker had probably been two steps from turfing into the bin.

Southcoast Nationals Moruya 2008

We attend a tonne of events through out the year and it’s always amazing to see the events in smaller towns seem to attract huge numbers of cars and spectators. Moruya has a population of ~6,000 people and the Southcoast Nationals attracted well over 500 cars this year and over 10,000 spectators. Goes to show that the surrounding areas are chock full of tough cars and keen street machiners! Not only is there the keen interest in tough cars, these are also the events where fellas like Rohan (pictured above) can bring along their creations and thrash the hell out of them. Who would have though dropping an FJ1200 motorbike motor into a golf cart would make for a smoke machine - he blew both tyres in the burnouts…..

IMA400 Race ready LC Torana

IMA 400 LC Torana built for Drag Racing

Most guys build a tough engine, sure they’ll give it the odd squirt down the track, but for the most part they will never really see the real potential of engine or car. Then there are guys like Chris Attard who has built himself what is essentially a ‘race car with numberplates’. Every last drop of power is funneled through the driveline and put to the ground with the idea of utilising it ALL. Small tweaks here and there being made to keep on propelling the little LC to lower ET’s. Chris has owned his LC for close to 8 years and it was no slouch back then having already run a 10.7 with a small block 377. Since Chris has made a mountain of mods, infact the original owner didn’t believe it was the same car when he saw Chris at the track.

Top Gear Australia to Start in September!

Top Gear Australia has now been confirmed to air in late September! The hosts of our Aussie version are Charlie Cox, Warren Brown and Steve Pizzati (pictured below), who describe themselves as the “ugliest men to go on television” will grace our screens, along with the Aussie Stig.

Top Gear Australia Hosts

I’d absolutely love to see their audition tapes and even more interested in who the Aussie Stig is going to be. Have to be one of our current V8 drivers maybe maybe??
