Talking [Featured RIDE] Hardsy's 1966 Ford Mustang

1280 OR 1600 Wallpaper

Ford originally produced the Mustang as an attempt to topple Chevrolets strangle hold over the sporty compact market with their ‘Corvair Monza‘ and right from the outset the ‘Pony Car’ was a huge success with Ford dealers taking 22,000 orders on its first day (April 17 1964)! It’s really not hard to see why the Mustang was and is still such a popular car, it oooozes style and is a classic that will out live past fossil fuels and ****roaches.

This particular Mustang was bought in 2006 by Daniel (Hardsy) as a very tidy left hand drive stock Mustang with a freshly rebuilt motor. Since the car was in such great shape both panel and trim wise, the only real mods Hardys had planned were a set of rims (Intro Billet Twisted Vista’s) and a 2″ drop in the ride height all round.

Bought to use as more of a classic cruiser, Hardsy tries to take out the Mustang atleast once a week in the warmer months and whenever the Melbourne weather isn’t to harsh during winter (so not real often hey mexicans??).

…cam was too big and it cuased the valve spring to bind, bending pushrods…

With 190rwkw, street radials and an open wheel center, this 66 Mustang has run a 14.8 at Heathcotes drag strip with an ET of 98mph, which would probably be good for a mid to low 13 with ET streets, new diff gears and minispool.

“I bought it under the impression that the motor had been reconditioned and was in good order. But not long after I bought it, I broke a rocker arm and it just kept on happening so we pulled down the motor to discover that the cam was too big and it caused the valves springs to bind, bending pushrods and eventually breaking the rocker arms.”

“The motor was a bit of a mess really, there was a lip on the bores and it really didn’t seem like the previous engine builder knew what they were doing. So I had a whole new motor built as it the old one was such a mess. The current setup has been really reliable and has a little extra punch which i’m happy with.”

After causing so much trouble, the current motor is reliable as clock work and has a bit of extra grunt to boot.

What’s Next? “I’ve ordered a minispool, diff gears (3.7) and a few interior parts so after I put all that in i’ll head back to Heathcote and hope for a low 13 with my ET streets on the back.”
