Hey AJ, have you worked out what you are doing diff wise? I assume your Merc has independant rear suspension. I was talking to an engineering mate of mine and he reckons a modified 9 inch would go in with some sort of uni joint joining the axles to the diff. I had trouble picturing it. Im still contemplating a jag rear end. A quick progress report...I have stripped the doors, bonnet, boot, lights, front bumper and horns. I also noticed that the front guards are bolted on. Ive removed every conceivable bolt but cant seem to budge them. How did you guys get em off? Tonight I plan on getting the rear bumper, seats and dash out. I'll try and get some pics for you tonight.

But we have considered a commo say VT diff as it looks like the cradle is similar and wouldn't require too much modification. But you never know right. Good luck with that list for tonight, can tell you now that the dash is a hell of a thing to get out ![]()

Oh ok AJ, yeah I only wanna be doing this thing once so Im going to go with a modified rear end.
FAT 245, Im doing a Twin turbo 350 chev in my Merc, and excuse my ignorance but Ive never heard of the BTR78 Series diff. Must be becuase its ford ahahahaha. What cars were they fitted to? I work at a wrecking yard so I have access to heaps of cars, mostly from about the mid 80's to mid 90's. Yeah, really not looking forward to getting the dash apart, I did half of one to get at an air conditioniung unit out of a 74 Merc and that wa painful enough.. Add a cripple and small garage t the equation and things could get interesting!

well the IRS from an AU Falcon aswell as a VT Commodore both use the Borg Warner 78 Series Diff's.
Also if your not going IRS, the BTR78 (Borg Warner 78's) were Avaliable from Multiple Brands.. FORD - XD-AU Holden - VH-VT Valiant - VH-CM |

Thanks for that 245...I will do some investigating. By the way, what sort of HP wold the BW diff's be good for? Im banking on starting at 500HP and maybe gong up from there, probably around the 650 to 700 mark

ah, for that sort of power I would look at a Ford 9" or a Mopar (Chrysler) 8 3/4" Diff.
The Only reason I mentioned the series was For AJ since his is a near standard Engine Rebuild. |

FAT 245, going to a 9 inch presents a ****load of problems, well that I can see anyway. Trying to fit a fixed diff on an IRS rear end isnt possible I dont think. On my Merc the axle housings look like they connect to the diff by a type fo ball and socket type joint. If I go to a fixed diff with and IRS rear end, I run the risk of breaking the diff housing right?
