I have run small 12mm id mm cable with out a problem its up to the amps the starter needs as it work ok for many years till we changed the starter then we had problems so we went to 20mm id cable thats used on trucks to starter and if your alt has a voltage drop sence wire it has to be run to the battery aswell if your alt doesn't have it get one that has as most new cars run one

overkill is always your friend when it comes to the elctrical system on your car. because ultimately its what will fail you on race day. the bigger the cable the less chance of voltage drop, heat soak also causes voltage drop because the harder your starter draws the more pressure it puts on cables. we use 00B&S commonly found on kenworth trucks. it is about the diameter of your thumb. none of the cars we have done ever have drama's cranking over after a skid and you cant get much more heat soak than that! bite the bullet spend the cash on good cable and you will be fine.

check voltage at starter solenoid during poor crank situation, anything below 9v is an issue, ensure voltage is sufficient at battery during crank ie above 9v if the voltage is below 9v at starter replace cables,i always prefer to use 70mm square welding cable costing around 25 bucks a meter.cost doesnt matter when your 10k plus hottie wont start hot.
