Just got my hands on the new entry forms for Mount Gambier 2010 and got a bit of a surprise when I read the first paragraph :
Taken directly from the entry form : MONEY BACK GUARANTEE For the first time EVER we are offering the FIRST 200 Entrants their Entry Fee Refunded. The Entry Fee of $100 will be returned to the FIRST 200 Entrants by November 12th 2010. To be eligible for this Refund Entrant must agree to all requirements, see reverse side for details. I reckon this is pretty big news, you see alot of new events these days charging large amounts for entrants to remove the risk for the organisers completely (fair enough to a degree). Then there are events that take entrants money and never eventuate *cough* easternats *cough* last minute nats *cough* Then take into account all the other costs associated with attending an event for entrants and The entrants are what gets the crowd, no entrants = no crowds! Big pat on the back to Les Adams for stepping upto the plate and letting the entrants know they're what it's all about Entry Forms Available here

the SA Hot Rod show used to do it - was fantastic! Paid up front, then you got it back at the event, even won money! They had a fully paid meal and the trophies included a photo of the actual car that won - it was really well done. Might also be the reason why that bloke stopped running it years ago - the cost?
