all tyres have speed ratings... i spose space savers would have rating of 150k's + (just a guess)

my 4b tyres are not for highway use and speed rated to 120... but that doesnt stop me... maybe ring up and ask if you can use them... then just rock up with them painted black so they dont look so ugly

I think most people using "space savers" as front runners are doing it a little differently to what your thinking. I'm pretty sure they don't just slap on some space savers from the boot & go racing.

Most people buy the VT Monaro series 1 space savers. They look like a 15" interceptors but are only 4inches wide, and then put on appropriate tyre like a 185/65R15 or proper slick drag tyre. This option is perfectly ok as its a decent wheel & a normal tyre.

space saver tyres are not meant for everyday use & have rather low speed ratings & terrible traction/grip on the road. I wouldnt recommend using them even on a surface as good as a drag strip. Those who do are risking their life & everyone's around them everytime they do. Just because the "can" doesn't mean you should.

i agree with abcent the tyre would be the concern with the space saver but once changed to a proper drag tyre i dont see how it would be any differnt in fact i would say that the steel space saver rim from the munro would be stronger than alot of other wheels but heavier

I have a pair of the 17inch Monaro 5 spoke Space savers... I bought them as I don't plan on going to the drags to often... They are a cheap, short term option for me... they do handle a little different as I have driven other cars with Traditional FR Runners, the offset is quite different to normal FR Runner but worked for my case as they fit over my 330mm rotors... I'm sure that if your heading to an ANDRA event you wouldn't be able to run, unless you fluked your way through but I got through fine at a T&T @ Willowbank... I only plan on going over 80kph for very short time, so not to much heat and pressure has a chance to build up and effect the tyre.

As for racing with space savers on the back, that was a silly mistake that old mates friend made, they provide very little traction and I could imagine on the rear would not handle braking very well. We should all know that a decent tyre under the rear and front for that matter stabilizes the car...

I have had a mate who used a pair of the 15inch black steelies on his ute in the power skid comp, it looked awesome and made a 450hp look like it had 600+ but was a little taily when he got out of it... But once again, I'm sure most of has have driven with cheesecutters on at some stage in our life... Its just a matter of using a little "Common Sense"

Got the ANDRA rule book in front of me, you cannot use them at an ANDRA event. I am running Nankang at the moment until the rain comes and my money tree grows to use proper front runners. There's a heap of cheap cheese cutters out there rated for speed so I recommend using 'real' tyres.
