I was reading a relatively well known car mag and noticed a column about using Space saver wheels (the ugly thin yellow things found in some spare wheel wells) as front runners. The column stated that the 80km rating usually placed on the wheel is due to potholes, gravel, uneven terrain usually found on any australian road. Obviously the dragstrip doesn't have any of these hazards so they deemed them safe to use. The column caught my eye as I thought it sounded like a cheap alternative for the racer just starting out. Obviously I don't want to find out they are wrong at 100mph. Has anyone heard of this being done or has done it. Any info would be appreciated.
See ya at the next event Pux. |

i had a mate that had a space saver on the back of his skyline he decided to run his mate down merrylands rd one night
![]() he is dead now they reckon he hit a tree at over 180kph after locking brakes for over 100m he lost control not a result of a failing space saver just driver error the space saver was still in tacked so they might be able to handle more speed then there rated for

I wouldn't do it.
Seriously man.. How much is your life worth? A set of rims to suit cheese cutters = <$800 + Tyres to suit.... I'd say you would come out with brand new rims and front runners less than 2 grand. ( and that's at a guess with what i consider to be MASSIVELY inflated prices). I haven't had the experience with them, but my front radials last me > 60,000Kms... and i'd assume the front runners would be similar.... that's about 3c/km IF the set-up cost you $2K. for 3c.... I wouldnt RISK running a space saver.

impretty sure even car manufacturers are canning space savers now also
1) if you fit a space saver your car becomes unroadworthy(uneven tyre sizes) 2) the 80k rating is a speed for safety due to the size and road contact 3) ive had a few cars in the shop that have had prangs with space savers on that havent made bends in the road or has affected the braking capabilities of the car(even with abs) |
