We’ve been piling on the tough Victorian cars lately, so we thought for a change we’d bring you a a tough NSW car. A 355 powered HQ Statesman built with drag racing and street cruising as its only duties. James’ Stato(KNG355) is no slouch even though it tips the scales at 1590kgs, it has run a best of an 11.32 to date.
KNG355 has been in James’ hands for a little over 10 years and he has no intentions of ever letting her or any of his V8’s go anytime soon. Over the years, almost every piece of the statesman has been revamped / replaced or customised, from paint & panel, custom interior, to a completely new driveline. Being a big car alot of parts have been cast away to save a little extra weight such as electric windows, heater box and anything else James thought to be redundant and still keeping the car as comfortable to drive as possible.

Being a devout holden man, James has tried to keep as much holden gear in the stato as he possibly could (hence going a 355 stroker rather than the norm of X cubes of chev for power. Having said that, the stato does have one part which is 100% ford (9″ diff) and James resents this so much that he has gone to the lengths of grinding off any stamps that say the four letter F word! In James’ own words “no fing Ford is written anywhere on my diff”. Funny thing is good mate of his Anthony - HYPO75 is a devout Ford man, so hang around these two for any amount of time and it’s basically a free for all holden V ford debate!

…no f$#%ing ford is written anywhere on my diff…

Laying down 375rwhp, James has taken the big bellied stato to an 11.32 second 1/4 @ 119mph so far and is gunning for an 11.0 before he either adds a procharger or slips a little of the giggle juice through it.

“At WSID ~18months back I had just crossed the 660′ mark and the rear end started sway side to side a bit, I wasn’t sure what was going on so kept my foot in and completed my run. Got to the end of the straight and just before the corner to head back to pits I jumped out and noticed I had a flat tyre. Anyways the fire crew stopped me as one of my pulleys had broken and one of the pieces made its way to the rear left tyre, punturing the tyre and rooting the rim.”
“The long and the short of it is, I ran a pb (at the time) with an 11.36 and was actually pretty happy to have a good reason to get rid of the steel rimmed cragars I had on it at the time and slip on the current Centerline Warriors. The motor wasn’t hurt except for the pulley and aside from the rim and tyre there were two small dints on the bonnet from where a couple of small pieces of the pulley hit.”

“I got the airbrushing done at summernats a couple of years back, it wasn’t really planned more a spur of the moment thing.”

What’s Next? “The only real changes in the future will be more power and hopefully that comes in the form of a ProCharger!”.
