Summernats 2006 / Summernats 20
Can anybody say CARNAGE? That’s basically what Summernats 20 was, a huge number of competitors in the burnout comp had flames popping out of their bonnets, engines saying good night and flames flying out the back! Crowds were huge and plenty of alcohol consumed by all who attended.
This was my first Summernats and was a little unsure as to where it was held, but upon reaching Canberra, driving down Federal Highway and there it was - massive plumes of smoke SUMMERNATS!
The streets of Canberra were top heavy with hot cars over the Summernats weekend. Wander on down the streets and there are people lining the streets ready to watch the procession of extroverts in their hot cars. BBQ’s, kegs and couches all strapped to the back of utes in anticipation of the hooligans infiltrating Canberra!
Inside The Nats!
Cruising
Saturday was cruising day at nats, everyone displaying their mods and power. Although security was cracking down quite heavily on guys dropping skids, there was still an awesome display of power.
If there was a mod that seemed to be the most prevelant, it would have to be airbags. The number of cars cruising the main drag with front, side or back raised was amazing. Probably one of the most impressive airbagged cars was the probag Lada Niva (seen in the pic below).
One of my favourite parts of the cruising was being able to get up close to cars and check out the engines and mods guys had.

Go to Whoa
Finals for the go to whoa were held on Sunday morning and there were plenty of hot show cars getting treated with zero respect. I spose it makes sense if they want to win grand champion! I tell ya what, no matter how many times I see Gary Myers’ mustang, it ALWAYS looks tough as nails!

Burnouts
Winners of the burnout comp
1st Pete Grmusa XR Falcon (atrisk pictured above)
2nd Joe Pagnano VR Ute (pictured below)
3rd John Taverna - XD Falcon (blohsv pictured below)
As mentioned earlier, there was PLENTY of carnage in the burnout comp. I’ve never seeen so many engines catch fire and so much oil get dropped and on the big name cars too!
The carnage was spectacular, and so were the burnouts themselves, it’s amazing how the smallest thing can make a burnout that much more unique. BLWNHX is one tough car (pictured below) that can pull a mean skid, but it was the addition of the NOS purge valve that really captured the crowds attention (check the image below) - awesome stuff, it’s ingenuity like this that separates the boys from the men!
Another standout were the after burnout celebrations, check out this fella, after ripping a huge burnout in his VN ‘xpiggy’ he jumped out to reveal his secret weapon. A broken leg!
The mad turk set fire to his HR ute and just kept his foot buried whilst the whole rear end was baking away! No need for the fireys, this ute was made for burning both rubber and panels!

Show Cars
A personal favourite of mine would have to be ‘1BADHK’ which I recently found out is a car from my haunt (Central Coast). The combination of holden’s two door HK, superb paint muscle . The interior and exterior are a thing of absolute beauty.
All manner of cars were on display from “Da Hulk” pictured above to immaculately detailed mustangs pictured below.
